Bokeh

Bokeh is a series of deliverables, such as book cover, poster, and object, created after the design of a typeface, centering around one specific word of an interest - bokeh. This project depicts a playful experimentation that can further be developed more.

The Ideation Process

The ‘word of interest’ for this project is “bokeh”. Due to my passion in photography, I wanted to dive more into about the details of certain skills and understand how to apply them. However, with my initial lack of detailed knowledge in photographic skills, I had to begin with learning the terms.

My purpose is to fully portray the definition of bokeh through the typeface and the visual elements of the deliverable designs. Bokeh is a photographic effect that is shown to our eyes, so I expressed them all together.

Bokeh [ bo·keh ]

noun

visual quality of the out-of-focus areas of a photographic image, especially as rendered by a particular lens.

The Initial Creation of The Bokeh

Designing the book cover of bokeh was fascinating because I was able to enjoy working with diverse skills and details. Implementing the definition of bokeh was my purpose in all of my designs because I wanted the designs to show the photographic effect even to the people who are not exposed of the word. However, although the initial creations utilized circular graphics to portray bokeh, the cover does not completely carry out the definition of the word.

The Final Creation of The Bokeh

The final book cover exhibits the ‘word of interest’ as the title, and with the Bokeh Typeface, I created a design that screams the definition and detail of bokeh. This design can fully show the idea of the photographic effect, and people can read the book to learn more about it.

The Initial Creation of The Bokeh Film Festival

Through the initial poster design, I was able to figure out what detail I liked and disliked. The pink “O” in “BOKEH” made the poster incohesive, and the ‘word of interest’ lacks detail. I also enjoyed playing around with a handmade effect by challenging myself to implement a colorful and circular shadow to portray the effect of bokeh.

The Final Creation of The Bokeh Film Festival

The film festival is an event that takes place in Austin, Texas to inspire photographers and videographers and provide an environment for anyone to enjoy films from all around the world. This poster is designed to showcase the event, and by applying the Bokeh Typeface, I portrayed the speciality of the event that will take place.

The Final Creation of The Bokeh Film Camera

The film camera was designed to be passed out at the film festival as the related object. This camera is not fully functional but only to point out the specific camera effect, giving people a taste and experience of bokeh.
